Harold Franck

Harold served with HQ-2-24. He fought on Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.

Harold is trying to track down his old buddies from the 4th Marines. If you would like to get in touch with him, you may send an email to jeffpadell@hq224.com and I will forward it on to him.

Iwo Jima

.Harold remembers Iwo Jima, during the battle he was stringing wire to the command post where Col. Richard Rothwell was in a hole along with a Radioman named Forney. Because he had to be exposed to run the wire, he was drawing fire from snipers.  Col. Rothwell gave him hell for drawing fire to their hole.

Harold landed with the Battalion on the first day. He specifically remembers the landing. His amtrak was on the far right of the line on the beach. He got out on the right side of the amtrak and it almost immediately got hit and started to burn.  He was in some sort of ditch and there was a jap sniper that had seemed to have singled him out and was shooting a high pitched sounding weapon at him, it sounded like a smaller caliber.  He doesn't remember how he got away from that, but his next memory was working his way along the beach and the bodies floating in the surf.

He was wounded on the second day on Iwo Jima by shrapnel in the lung and neck and was evacuated, for him the battle was over.
